Mathias Muleme “Vida” — Signed Limited Edition Embossed Etching, 1985 (25/50)

• This striking mother-and-child composition rendered in warm ochre and black tones, layered with Muleme’s signature blind-embossed geometric motifs (zigzags, circles, checkerboard patterns) surrounding the central figures — a hallmark of his personal symbolic vocabulary  
• Executed using the traditional intaglio process: the image is incised into a metal plate by hand or acid-etched, then hand-inked and pulled through a press under pressure, making each piece a true original work rather than a mechanical reproduction  Mathias Muleme was born in Uganda in 1943, immigrated to Canada in 1967, earned his B.A. from the University of Guelph in 1970, studied at the Ontario College of Art, and completed his MFA at Wayne State University in 1976. He resided in London, Ontario, and exhibited widely across Canada, the U.S., and Africa, with work held in numerous public and private collections worldwide.
• Muleme is celebrated for his mastery of the etching medium and his distinctive combination of bold relief, abstract pattern, and haunting figurative imagery, praised by critics for its “intimate ease and poetic elegance”

• Condition: Overall good vintage condition — the print itself is clean and vibrant with no visible tears, fading, or foxing.
• The frame shows light surface scuffing and a couple of minor scattered marks/residue on the backing board consistent with age and prior display; hanging wire is intact and sturdy. A great candidate for reframing if a fresher presentation is desired
