Up for sale is a beautiful, classic Canadian nostalgia piece titled “The Way It Was” by the internationally recognized Canadian artist and illustrator David Preston Smith.
This detailed, heartwarming scene captures the essence of classic Canadian winters, featuring children playing an outdoor game of pond hockey, an old-fashioned wood-burning stove keeping gear dry on the ice, a faithful dog watching the game, and a picturesque winter village with a prominent church steeple rising in the background.
Smith is highly regarded for his historical and Canadian sporting illustrations, including official artwork for premier events like the Canada Cup Hockey Series and Olympic Games.
Year of Work/Publication: 1987 / Published in March 1988
Edition Number: 46 / 950 (Hand-numbered in the lower-left corner)
Signatures: Hand-signed by the artist in pencil on the lower right border, with an additional printed signature and date ('87) within the plate.
Framing & Mounting: Professionally housed in a dark brown wood frame with a clean cream-coloured mat board. The backing features a wire hanging mount ready for installation.
Certificate of Authenticity: Includes the original, fully intact Certificate of Authenticity (COA) issued by C.A.H.A. Services (Toronto, Ontario) attached securely to the back dust cover, hand-dated March 21, 1988, and signed by the artist.
Condition: The print itself is in very nice condition with strong, crisp winter tones. There is a light rippling/waving texture on the white bottom border of the mat sheet, but it does not encroach on the main image.
The wood frame remains completely solid, though it shows some minor surface scuffs/paint transfer marks along the top edge consistent with storage and moving.
The rear paper dust cover has some typical edge tearing but the framing remains tight.
