This artwork is an original signed etching titled "Red Niche" by the acclaimed Canadian artist J.C. (John Carl) Heywood.
This particular piece's frame has been a bit damaged (see pics) which is reflected in the price.
Created in 1983, it is part of a limited edition of only 75 prints (this one being number 47).
This is a color etching, a process where an image is incised into a metal plate with acid and then hand-inked.
Heywood was a master printmaker known for his supreme assurance in technical mastery.
The piece features a triptych of three recessed "niches," each containing a vibrant floral arrangement against a textured, grey background.
The label on the back shows it was originally sold by the Mira Godard Gallery in Toronto, one of Canada's premier commercial galleries.
This strengthens its authenticity and history of ownership. J.C. Heywood (1941–2022) was a Professor Emeritus at Queen’s University and a highly influential figure in Canadian printmaking.
His works are held in prestigious collections, including the Bibliothèque Nationale du Québec.
Because only 75 of these were ever made, the piece is inherently rare.
