Translated and Introduced by: Maurice Maeterlinck, first published est. 1891.

The Spiritual Espousals (De Nupsis Spiritualibus in Latin) is Ruusbroec’s most famous mystical treatise, describing the soul’s union with God as a form of spiritual marriage.

Maeterlinck was captivated by mystical and symbolist thought, and translated Ruusbroec’s work into poetic, accessible French in L’Ornement des Noces Spirituelles.

He introduced the text with essays and commentary that framed Ruusbroec not just as a theologian, but as a proto-symbolist mystic, deeply aligned with Maeterlinck’s own spiritual and philosophical views.

This work helped reintroduce Ruusbroec to a modern French-speaking audience, and also influenced Maeterlinck’s later writings, especially Le Trésor des Humbles.
