This piece by the late Canadian artist Brian Burke (1952–2017) comes to us pre-owned and in need of repair. (see pics)The frame has some scuffs and the canvas needs care
Mr. Burke was a prominent figure in the Atlantic Canadian art scene, known for his "Neo-Expressionist" style.
While he is most famous for his figurative works (often depicting men in suits or lonely urban figures), his technique frequently involved the same smoky washes, vertical columns, and muted color palettes seen in your painting.
Style: Abstract Neo-Expressionism.
The painting uses thin, atmospheric washes of grey, blue, and charcoal. The vertical "striped" or "pillar" effect is a common motif in his backgrounds to create a sense of depth and isolation.
The white, impasto (thickly painted) stars are a recurring symbolic element in some of his more "dreamlike" or "nocturnal" series.
The block-letter "BURKE" signature in the lower right matches the style found on many of his authenticated canvases.
Brian Burke’s market is strongest in Canada, particularly through galleries in Prince Edward Island and Toronto.
