5th of 16 volumes, "the new edition" by Rivington, London, printed 1826
The Works of the Right Honourable Edmund Burke is a collected edition of the writings and speeches of Edmund Burke (1729–1797), an influential British statesman, political thinker, and writer known for his support of constitutional limitations on government, opposition to the French Revolution, and contributions to conservative thought.
Volume 5 shifts focus from domestic politics and the American crisis to one of Edmund Burke’s most enduring and ambitious political campaigns: his crusade against corruption and abuse of power in British India, particularly the impeachment of Warren Hastings, the first Governor-General of Bengal. This volume contains a series of speeches delivered between 1787 and 1794, during the House of Lords trial of Hastings, which became one of the most significant political and moral confrontations of the 18th century.
