Nicholas Hornyansky was a Canadian-Hungarian artist whose depictions of historic architecture and landscapes were rendered in realistic yet vibrant hues. Born on August 11, 1896 in Budapest, Hungary, his early life revolved around the production of art, mixing colors for his father's printing office. He went on to study painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. During the 1920s, Hornyansky acquired technical knowledge of printmaking, specifically the complex process of aquatinting. Moving to Canada in 1929, he exhibited extensively, before becoming a celebrated contributor to the field of Canadian printmaking. The artist died on May 25, 1965 in Toronto, Canada. His works are held in the collections of the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto and the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa.
