  • Made by J.L WITZ FURN CORP, or Basic Furniture Company or Basic-Witz Furniture Company which has a long history, dating from the founding of the Basic City School Desk and Furniture Manufacturing Company in 1889. Ten years later, the Basic Furniture Company was chartered and purchased the facilities of the School Desk and Furniture Manufacturing Company. In 1922, Basic Furniture Company purchased the W.W. Putnam Company plant in Staunton and operated plants in Waynesboro Company, the J.L. Witz Furniture Corporation, in Staunton in 1925. The two companies were operated separately, although Mr. Witz was President of both companies until his death in 1936. Boyd Stombock succeeded him as President of both companies. When the Basic Furniture Companies Plant #2 the old Putnam Plant in Staunton, was destroyed by fire in 1939, stockholders of Basic Furniture and J.L. Witz Furniture voted to merge. The merger was completed July 1, 1939 and Basic-Witz Furniture remained in continuous operation, manufacturing wood furniture in Staunton and Waynesboro through to the 1960s
